Adopt a Digger

April 16, 2015

Adopt a Digger, Memorial Wall
Comments are off

The Adopt a Digger Program is an essential part of our Memorial Wall project.  The Memorial Wall has been built to house plaques commemorating the sons of Victoria Park who volunteered to sign up for the Great War.  In several notable cases, a number of brothers from local families signed up together, which symbolises the collective spirit of the time.

Each serviceman, or Digger, can be adopted by individuals, families and businesses who wish to keep alive the ANZAC spirit and teach future generations about the value of their sacrifice – as typified by this letter we received last year:

We are not from the Victoria Park area but thought this was a fine way to pay tribute to our brave Anzacs.

We decided to “Adopt” 2 diggers as we have two sons. We are hoping that this will be the start of a tradition, with each son encouraging their children to not only honour those that have fought and died for our country, but to have a personal interest in a specific soldier and the role he played in creating a better place for us to live in.

If it all possible, it would be nice if the two diggers we are allocated were related to each other.

FAQ

  • How much does it cost to Adopt a Digger?

A one-off payment of $500. And we have a Charitable Contributions Licence, so it’s tax-deductable.

  • Can I select my Digger?

Yes (provided he hasn’t already been selected). And remember, our program will eventually include the Second World War and other conflicts, so if you want to pick someone from those periods, you’ll have that option too.

  • How will my sponsorship be used?

Your sponsorship contributes directly to the cost of having the plaque for your Digger made, installed and maintained.

The Memorial wall itself has been funded by our main sponsors (Lotterywest, Town of Victoria Park and Crown, plus many generous local businesses and individuals). The cost of the plaques is being met by our RSL while Adopt a Digger contributions arrive.

Our goal throughout the project has been and remains to make this a memorial constructed for and by the people of Victoria Park.

Victoria Park RSL is a non-profit organisation staffed entirely by volunteers.

  • Will my sponsorship be private?

Yes.  Your name is not included on the plaque.
